Celebrating World Arabic Language Day on December 18, 2024

Arabic is the most spoken language within the group of Semitic languages, and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, as it is spoken by more than 420 million people in the Arab world and abroad, especially in its neighboring regions in the continents of Africa and Asia, and enjoys the status of an official language in about 25 countries.

The Arabic language is of paramount importance to Muslims, as it is the language of the Qur'an and prayer is done only by mastering some of its words. This language also provides access to a world full of diversity in all its forms and creativity in its various forms and styles, oral and written, including prose, poetry and other arts.

The Arabic language has influenced many other languages, and has formed a tributary of scientific, literary and philosophical production in the world for centuries, and helped to transfer Greek and Roman scientific and philosophical knowledge to Europe in the Renaissance, and contributed to spreading the culture of dialogue between civilizations and cultures along the land and sea routes of the ancient Silk Road and other global trade routes across the continents of Asia, Europe and Africa.

According to the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly issued on December 18th, 1973, the Arabic language was adopted as the sixth official language of this organization, along with English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese, and the world celebrates the Arabic language on this date every year.

For its part, Algeria commemorates this day, like other Arab countries, and is working to preserve and promote the Arabic language by expanding its use, paying attention to literary and scientific production, and employing technological development to promote this ancient language and valorize the Algerian cultural heritage.
